Fifty years ago the Happening was what was really happening, on the international visual art scene. Instead of people visiting galleries to look at art objects, audiences became involved in a series of events that made no distinction between observer and observed, and sometimes didn't seem to have a beginning, middle or end. Happenings paved the way for performance art and live art. And the 60s wouldn't have been half as groovy without them. Early Happenings, like Allan Kaprow's 18 Happenings in 6 Parts, Claes Oldenburg's Snapshots From A City and Al Hansens' Requiem For W.C. Fields, inspired a generation of young artists, and grabbed the attention of the public. In this programme, Bob Dickinson re-imagines the Happening with contemporary artists and writers including RoseLee Goldberg, Ilana Mitchell, Andrea Cusmano, and Lorenzo Fusi. Dickinson also investigates the way Happenings travelled around the world, to Asia and Europe, thanks to Nam June Paik in Korea and Japan, Adrian Henri in Liverpool, the Viennese Aktionists, Joseph Beuys in Germany, and Yves Klein in France.

As Happenings became part of popular culture, they became increasingly spectacular, and in 1967 Britain's biggest ever example of the activity was staged at Alexandra Palace in London - the 24 Hour Technicolour Dream. It was a high-point, in more ways than one, for the hippie counterculture, but it also marked the point when Happenings stopped being art. We meet an eye-witness. Now, half a century after Happenings transformed the art scene, some contemporary artists, such as Tanya Bruguera, from Cuba, are revisiting and reviving several of Allan Kaprow's classic Happenings for a new audience - and we find out what happens when she tries them out on the streets and shops of Liverpool.

Set in the grounds of a 17th century country manor house formerly inhabited by Ian Fleming and the family of Marianne Faithfull, SUPERNORMAL is an art entertainment event for an exclusive audience of eight hundred, less a conventional festival than a generated artwork in itself.

Art organisations from OPA Guadalajara Mexico to Aspex Portsmoth, are creating new works fro SUPERNORMAL, a visual art, film, music and 'in conversations' programme situated across fifty acres of quintessential English countryside. Professional artists selected to create SUPERNORMAL present ideas and working processes in a variety of disciplines and media, representing the breadth of contemporary practice and issues from the political to the personal.

SUPERNORMAL will inhabit and incorporate the varied buildings on site including a Gothic Manor Performance House, Caravan Discotheque, The Grain Store Talks Programme and The Luna Cinema. The live entertainment programme features krautrock legends Faust headlining a specially selected and wildly diverse bill comprising art rock independents, psychedelic visionaries, garage-fixated hellraisers and acoustic troubadours alike, with premium quality DJ action following into the night and beyond.

SUPERNORMAL is an eco site with hout outdoor showers, fresh drinking water, local food and breweries providing organic seasonal produce, with not a portaloo in site.

In spite of the unassuming title, Supernormal really does look different from other festivals. Non-commercial and artist-organised, its debut incarnation off-sets an inspired music lineup with performance art, film screenings and artist's talks. Kraut-rockers par excellence, Faust headline, with support from the likes of experimental folkie Alexander Tucker, Teeth Of The Sea's far-out contemporary space-rock and Gnod's psychedelic drone. Meanwhile, artists will be causing creative sparks with new work and discussion groups throughout the site. It's all happening amid the 50 acres of a 17th-century country house, celebrating its 60th anniversary as a proto-hippy commune.

CGP London are pleased to introduce, after a two year £870,00 renovation project, Dilston Grove, an historic Grade II listed former church in Southwark Park, as a spectacular venue for large-scale presentations of contemporary art. Except for a brief period in the 1970’s, when it served as Richard Wentworth’s studio, Dilston Grove remained empty and derelict until it was rescued by CGP London in 1999. Since then, it has been in continual use as a temporary project space for artists and performers. Previous exhibitions at Dilston Grove include Richard Wilson’s Turbine Hall Swimming Pool, Shona Illingworth’s The Watch Man, and Andrew Kotting’s In The Wake of a Deadad. Dilston Grove has also hosted work from artists such as Ackroyd & Harvey, Michael Cross and Mike Nelson.

Alongside CGP London’s second venue Cafe Gallery – a purpose-built gallery located just a few minutes away in Southwark Park – Dilston Grove will function as a raw space for a planned series of site-specific installations. Established by the Bermondsey Artists’ Group in 1984, CGP London show a diverse range of emerging and established artists as part of an integrated exhibition and learning programme. Originally earmarked for development by Southwark Council, CGP London’s success in retaining Dilston Grove as a permanent public art space consolidates its’ status as one of London’s premier art destinations.

About the building

Dilston Grove is situated on the Southwest corner of Southwark Park in South-East London. The park was opened in 1869 and, along with Finsbury Park; it is the earliest of the parks opened by the Metropolitan Board of Works. The first church on this site was opened in 1886 by Clare College Cambridge as part of a university mission in a ‘spiritually destitute district’. After signs of subsidence in 1909, an appeal fund was started for a new church.

The church as it now stands was built in 1911, the first poured concrete building in England, at a cost of 32,718.16s.4d. Designed by architects Sir John Simpson and Maxwell Ayrton, it was described at the time of opening as the finest modern church in South London and is now a Grade II listed building.

After decades of lying unused, CGP London brought Dilston Grove back to life in 1999 as a raw space for site-specific installation that compliments the pristine purpose built space at Cafe Gallery.

About the renovation project

The renovation project was designed to retain the unique raw qualities of the main church space whilst addressing the extensive level of dereliction. The roof has been fully restored and new, historically accurate, rainwater pipes have been fitted. All services have been replaced and a black-out system has been introduced. The former Parish Room has been extensively remodelled to create a new entrance, raise the floor to make the building fully accessible and to provide a permanent home for our Learning Programme. The Lead Architect was Walter Menteth of Walter Menteth Architects and the conservation architect was Sherry Bates of Bates Zambelli.

The Argus: Interview with Dave Tusk

Dave Tusk casually reels off the list of stunts he’s been involved with in his time as a performer.

“We’ve done bed of nails, enemas with blood, live scarification, human dartboard, lots of stuff with fire. I guess one of the most extreme was in Zurich recently where I was fed five metres of ribbon by my wife (the flame-haired Lucifire) and then lay on a gurney while she took a scalpel to my abdomen and pulled the ribbon out again. We invited a few people from the audience to try to get it out with surgical gloves on but four of them passed out.”

Needless to say, Fire Tusk Pain Proof – the circus the couple launched several years ago at London’s Torture Garden fetish club – is not for kids.

The knife-wielding, sword- swallowing, fire-spitting, band of 18 describe themselves as “a very theatrical stunt show, without safety nets or wires”. Dave adds; “I think nowadays people are so used to TV fodder as entertainment, with all its CGI and smoke and mirrors, they assume everything in life is like that.

“We go to great lengths to make people realise everything they see in our show is real. We really are doing these things.”

In a show they have toured around the world and which headlined the Big Top at last year’s Glastonbury Festival, the fearless bunch present (and this is listing just a selection): straitjacket escapes, chainsaws, flaming whips, piercing weightlifting, Samurai sword chop, upside-down clowns and human blockhead.

“We have one stunt we’ve recently devised where I’m on a bed of nails and a piece of wood pivots on top of me like a human seesaw. Lucifire rides a motorbike over me. Oh yeah, and the wood’s on fire. When we thought of it, we thought we’d be able to find information about how to do it on the internet but we couldn’t, so we’ve made it up entirely. There’s another where we get Fancy Chance (aka the reigning Miss Alternative World) and swing her around by her hair. That’s quite a traditional stunt though.”

This year’s Fringe features a healthy collection of circuses, from the fairly traditional Moscow State to the more left-field No Fit State. “This is much more circus with the feel of a night-club,” Tusk says. “It’s edgy, hard-hitting, high-octane and strictly for adults.”

This week, The Fire Tusk Pain Proof Circus have confirmed as a headline act for the Brighton Fringe Festival. The circus will present their biggest ever show, One of Our Clowns is Missing at Freerange a unique temporary structure running from 1 – 8 May 2010.

A scorching production of terrifying stunts and grotesque gags One of Our Clowns is Missing draws on the continuum of circus and freak show, creating a richly imagined and horribly plausible parallel universe.

With a cast of human oddities The Fire Tusk Pain Proof Circus combine neo-cabaret, performance art, fetish and burlesque, to create a fragmented, twenty first century, acid soaked, apocalyptic vision of the future. In 2009, The Fire Tusk Pain Proof Circus headlined Glastonbury Festival’s Circus Big Top with a show that firmly stuck two fingers up at the field’s family friendly tradition and established new links between the Circus Field and Mutoid Waste’s Trash City.

One of Our Clowns is Missing stars Lucifire as the whip-cracking Ring Mistress alongside her loyal, snarling monster-pet The Pain Proof Tusk. Big Grey as the Voodoo Master, The Baron as the Dandy Strongman and Fancy Chance (reigning Miss Alternative World) as the Hapless Usherette. Featuring a company of twenty gleefully macabre clowns, playfully dynamite juggling, chainsaw wielding and aerial hair hanging, the show evokes memories of The Pilo Family Circus, a novel by Will Elliott, and Todd Browings’ 1932 film Freaks.

Performances are nightly from 10:00 PM – 12:30 AM, Saturday 1^st – Saturday 8^th May 2010 at Freerange, St Peter's Church Gardens, London Road, BN1 4GU.

The Crazy Ray (Paris Qui Dort, 1923)

An experiment shot in 21 days by Rene Clair, who was until then a young film critic and actor in film serials. The night watchman on the Eiffel Tower comes off his shift to find people all over Paris frozen in motion. Paris has been brought to a complete standstill except for a few people who are out of range of Dr Bardon's ray. This film is said to be an affectionate look back at early trick films, the film concerns a group of people trying to survive in post-ray Paris, with some stunningly dangerous Eiffel Tower location work. Taxi Dolls (1929)

American silent black and white slapstick comedy from Sennett’s Keystone Comedy Studios. Fritz Lang's Metropolis wasn't the only 1920s film to have a robot woman. In Taxi Dolls, Professor Schmidt's astounding European novelty Beatrice the Mechanical Doll is the latest thing in obedient flappers until a stage hand accidentally starts her up and she becomes confused with an identical woman in one of the city's Owl Cabs. The Swamps Of Jupiter, Space Patrol, 25 minutes (1963)
Contact has been lost with the Scientific Headquarters on Jupiter and Colonel Raeburn despatches Galasphere 024 with Captain Larry Dart with his crewmen Husky and Slim to investigate. In orbit, they receive a transmission in Jovian and land. The cause of loss of contact is the Martian Doctor Mall and his assistant, who are killing the native Lumis for their skins. The expedition was killed when they refused to be involved but Mall also offers Dart a cut of the profits in return for his silence...

...By the 1920s, the old burlesque circuits began to close and in an attempt to compete against the technology of film and radio, theatre owners began to introduce something they couldn't offer - the modern striptease. Strippers soon dominated the burlesque scene, with their routines becoming increasingly graphic, but there continued to be a strong emphasis on detailed costume, comedy and performance, with elaborate fan dances, nipple-tassel twirling, dancing contortionists and even transvestite strips.

"The Big Tease is a return to that form of entertainment," explains event organiser Siena Barnes. "People are looking for something more than just a club and DJs." Siena's intention is to offer a whole range of acts, including cutting edge live music, with Il Bordello being "an ideal place where people can try new things."

Veronica, a member of the comedy striptease act Burly Q sees it as an escapism from a time of doubt. It provides an outlet for people who don't want to listen to trance music and take loads of Es all night. People always like good adult entertainment." Meanwhile, back at the launch of the Big Tease, this new-look burlesque serves up the aforementioned colourful strippers, singing, cowgirls and vintage DJs, compered by an all-singing, all-dancing camp bellhop. And it's an unmitigated success with the good ship Il Bordello almost sinking, thanks to the number of people crammed in to witness the shenanigans. Extract of an article by Mark Berry.
